Learning a foreign language requires a lot of effort from a person. But these efforts pay off, it is worth learning a new language. Knowledge of a foreign language opens up many opportunities: it allows you to communicate with people from all over the world, makes a person more in demand as a specialist, makes it possible to travel without problems or even move abroad.
There are many reasons to learn languages, but the main thing is to know how to do it effectively. English has been taught in schools for 10 years, but many students cannot say anything but “London is the capital of Great Britain”. To learn a language faster and more efficiently, you need to be smart about it.
1. Repetition is the mother of learning
The more often words are repeated, the better they are imprinted in memory. A good way to do this is to create special cards. On one side, a word is written in the native language, on the other in the target language. These words should be repeated regularly. Those that are already well remembered should be postponed. You can return to them after a longer time to check how well they are absorbed, and, if necessary, repeat.
Songs tend to be firmly fixed in memory. This can play into your hands if you translate the lyrics of the song in the target language in advance. To do this, you need to write out all the new words and constructions in order to find their translation. Then, when re-listening, you need to try to mark them mentally. This exercise helps you repeat words at the same time and improve your speaking skills.
To create a strong connection between a word and the object that it stands for, it is necessary to build an association between them. To do this, you can stick stickers with words in the desired language on pieces of furniture and other things in the house with which you often interact. This method is good for memorizing everyday things, but it is not suitable for other topics.
4. Different senses
To learn a language as efficiently as possible, you can use different senses. Read the text aloud so that you can not only perceive it with your eyes, but also with your ears. Moreover, reading aloud helps the speech apparatus to get used to the sound of a new language.
The most important thing to understand in learning languages is to know yourself. You need to experiment and learn what works for you and what doesn’t. For some, reading will be an effective method of learning, for others, learning through music is more appropriate. Everyone has different strengths and perceptions, so you need to understand yourself, not to waste time on useless work and learn foreign languages effectively.
